2012 SADSAA BILLFISH CLASSIC19/03/2012
Over 300 excited deepsea anglers met in Richards Bay for the fourth consecutive Full Release Billfish Classic hosted by SADSAA (February 22nd -25th) where an amazing 34 Billfish were caught and released. This included 5 Sailfish, 7 Black Marlin, 4 Striped Marlin and 18 Blue Marlin.
By mid-morning on the first day it was obvious that there were marlin around with regular reports of strikes coming in – and 15 marlin and 3 Sailfish were released that day. And the first “Pop Up Satellite Archival Tag” (PSAT) ever to be deployed in the Southern Hemisphere was used to tag a Blue Marlin caught by Riaan Chalmers that day.
A huge Southwester came through overnight blowing out the second day and later anxious anglers were relieved to hear positive forecasts for the final two days.
While Friday at first light looked to be another good day, the NE wind picked up fairly early making sea conditions difficult but it still proved to be a good day with 11 Marlin tagged and the second PSAT deployed by ENIGME also in a Blue Marlin.
At the end of Day 3 things were looking tight on the leader board as several boats had two Marlin on board - the race was on for someone to get his third fish early on Saturday.
Jaco van Rensburg was that lucky angler on the boat Trinity making his team the clear winners of the R100 000 first prize.
Club Marine ran a lucky draw at the competition and these were the lucky winners:
Wayne Huddlestone (Nelspruit District Angling Club) – Lowrance iFinder Go hand-held GPS
Mike Reynders (Richard Bay Skiboat Club) - two Esca lures
Mark Nel (Kempton Park) - two Esca lures
This tournament serves as a qualifying event for the World offshore Championships, therefore the winning team is invited to participate in the overall Championship in Cabo St Lucas the following year.
