CLUB MARINE GOES FISHING IN STYLE

06/02/2012

Club Marine’s Russell and Dean from Boating International took a welcome fishing break on the KZN South Coast during the holidays,  treating themselves to a luxury charter which had them raving about the experience – and  showing off their respectable catches.

Having heard many favourable reports of the top-class outings with Too Blue Charters at Shelley Beach, they decided to try it for themselves and it was obvious from the start that this was something special.  Owner Lyle Fraser has successfully combined years of experience and utter professionalism to provide walk-aboard fishing with a difference.

For starters, the stunning Ace Glider 750 with two powerful Mercury outboard motors was already prepped and waiting for surf launching at the requested 7am (they start from 6am – to around 2.30pm weather permitting) – and skipper Brett Bowden made light work of negotiating the waves before heading off for the waters at Hibberdene. To their delight only seconds after clearing the breakers there was a steaming hot cup of coffee in their hands, the lines were out and they were on their way.

Looking around it was clear that absolute attention to detail is given to every aspect of the trip from the boat’s immaculate appearance, well-maintained equipment which includes an impressive array of electronics, rods, lures and other tackle to the top-class meals and regular refreshments  and of course…the fishing.

Having taken Lyle’s advice about the best fish to target the lines were rigged and ready to roll. After only 40 minutes the fish were on the boil and Russell caught his first Tuna of 7kgs, quickly followed by Dean’s 6kg Bonnie. It was almost a case of fishing to order as another 7.5kg Tuna followed for Russell and Dean caught an 8kg Bonnie.

A couple of Dorado later (and some thrilling misses), the exhausted anglers enjoyed an excellent lunch and enjoyed the time to reflect on the “bigger” one’s that got away.

While conditions started off smoothly enough, fitting in a good few hours of picturesque conditions, the wind picked up a few knots resulting in 3m swells and choppy seas, but nothing the Ace Glider couldn’t handle with consummate ease.
The entire fishing experience was filmed by an HD video camera mounted on the T-Top and a DVD is created for each angler giving them a lifetime memory of the experience on disc.

To crown it all the fish they wanted to keep were professionally filleted and packed for them. Russell says it was an incredible experience well worth repeating. While seven people can easily be accommodated, Lyle prefers to take a maximum of four anglers on a charter to ensure comfort and exclusivity and at R6,000 for the days fishing this works out to only R1,500 per angler for a day of exclusive fishing.
