SOUTH AFRICA EXCELS IN WAKEBOARD/WAKESKATE CHAMPIONSHIPS19/03/2012
South Africa’s best wakeboarders and wakeskaters rode their hearts out to take second place overall in the exciting international Europe and Africa Championships at Emerald Casino on the Vaal River on Saturday and Sunday, February 18thth and 19th. Favourites Italy, took top honours proving to be a hard team to beat.
150 top riders from 13 countries gathered for an action-packed weekend of thrills and spills, drama and disappointment for many, as they crashed out in the qualifying rounds leaving the successful few to battle it out in the finals. Excited spectators lining the banks of this fabulous venue held their breath as the world’s best showed off their skill in spectacular fashion with death-defying manouevres behind the stunning Malibu towboat, capturing everyone’s attention.
South Africa’s team of 14 riders ranging from 8 – 38 years old was captained by Jono Joseph from Vanderbijlpark. Club Marine-sponsored Justin Selby placed 10th in the Masters division while Cape Town’s Dylan Mitchell came second overall in Junior Men. Sean Faccio from the Vaal Triangle took third place in the Pro Men category.
Israel took part in these championships for the first time and team captain and coach Lior Eliyahu took time out to get six-year-old David Ledsham, son of Club Marine’s managing member Caryne, up and riding after a mere five minute’s instruction.
The enthusiastic youngster was so thrilled he even managed a quick wave to the delight of his family and Lior who owns and runs the Wake Up Ski School at Eingev on the north side of the Sea of Galilee.
