Congratulations to Brett Bartho, winner of the 2019 Umhlanga Skiboat Festival, with his Yellowfin Tuna of 29.14kg. This fish hit the scales in the final moments of weigh-in on Day 2, ending a nail-biting wait for Graham Doman whose 26.74kg Cuda had been in the lead since the first day. (He ended second overall). Sixteen-year-old Rachel, (our Managing member Caryne’s daughter) took third place with her 13.45kg Dorado, caught near Richards Bay on Day 1.

Congratulations to Club Marine-sponsored Byron Kane, on successfully defending his title at this popular species competition held at Ponta Do Ouro. This is his third win of the world’s biggest Jetski Fishing only competition. Byron struck gold on the first day, catching six species which included a 50kg Sailfish, a 28kg GT, a Jobfish, a Bonito, other Kingfish and a 15kg Cuta. He added to this success with three Species on Day 2 and four on Day 3 – to take the title. Well done Byron – you’ve made us proud, again!!

Mark Reeves came in second and Gordon Bannister was third.

SUNDAYS RIVER CLASSIC 2019 (Feb 1st – 3rd)

This year a record 476 anglers turned up to fish every inch of the Sundays River – to catch one or all of the allotted 10 species. For a whole day and all night (in the rain and wind), anglers lined the river banks, bounced around in anything buoyant – tubes, dinghies, boats, Jetski, kayaks – all hoping to hook the biggest or the most fish.

Magnus Doubell’s 106cm Sand Shark beat them all to first place with Jude Thompson’s 99.5cm Dusky Cob second – and they shared the R15 000 cash and other prizes.

Top boat angler (and top Senior) – Duane Botha with a 192cm Diamond Ray.

Top bank angler – G. Maggies – Top Kayak angler – Roy Nel.

Most Species caught by one angler – Edmund Roos – a Spotted Grunter, a Sand Shark and a Diamond Ray.

While several exciting Watersport events took place this summer, one of the biggest of all was the 2019 World Fishing Games in February and Club Marine was proud to contribute to the sponsorship of several events. These prestigious Games are considered the “Olympics of Fishing” and South Africa emerged a winner in hospitality, organisation and as a great fishing destination for the 15 disciplines. (Rumour has it that we will again be the country of choice in two years’ time.)

South Africa took Gold in several disciplines including:

The Black Bass Fishing World Championship. SABAA President Protea Angler and Club Marine sponsored Craig Fraser and his team mate Justy Varkevisser also took Gold Medals home for the best boat overall and they caught the biggest fish at the event.

There were so many highlights and proud moments from our South African teams throughout the two weeks of intense competition – that we are bursting with pride. Congratulations to all!
